Zack Bolduc scored the only goal of a shootout that went three extra rounds to give the host Montreal Canadiens a 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
Jacob Fowler made 30 saves in regulation and overtime for the Canadiens, who snapped their three-game losing streak (0-2-1).
Daniil Tarasov also stopped 30 shots in the first 65 minutes for the Red Wings, who dropped their second in two nights (0-1-1).
It was the second career shutout for both goaltenders.
The Canadiens had three goals called back.
Alexandre Texier’s apparent overtime winner 2:37 into the extra period was overturned by an offside challenge from Detroit coach Todd McLellan. Bolduc was offside.
An apparent goal by Cole Caufield 1:16 into the game was reversed by video review because the puck did not completely cross the goal line.
Bolduc put the puck into the net 7:05 into the second period, but the goal was immediately waved off because of goalie interference by Jake Evans.
There were chants from the Montreal crowd of “We want Larkin” at times when the Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin was on the ice, but booed him during his shootout attempt, which was stopped by Fowler. It was first reported on June 4, that Larkin asked to be traded and was removed as the team’s captain at the beginning of training camp.
Bolduc hit the goal post with 8:07 left in the first period.
Fowler made a big save on Alex DeBrincat’s wide-open backhand attempt from just below the left circle with a little less than five minutes remaining in the second period and stopped Andrew Copp on a breakaway attempt 3:37 into the third.
Tarasov denied a shot that deflected off of Caufield just outside the crease at the 6:09 mark of the third period.
Montreal defenseman Kaiden Guhle made his season debut after undergoing adductor muscle surgery over the summer.
