Jeremy Pena went 4-for-6 with two homers and four RBIs, Yordan Alvarez smacked a three-run homer and the Houston Astros remained tied for first place in the American League West with a 13-2 rout of the Athletics on Saturday night at West Sacramento, Calif.
Isaac Paredes had three hits, including a homer, and Lucas Spence hit his fourth homer of the series for Houston (80-81). The Astros are tied with the Texas Rangers atop the division entering the final day of the season Sunday. The Astros hold the tiebreaker.
Hayden Wesneski (6-2) gave up two runs (one earned) and six hits over seven innings for Houston.
Alvarez, who hit his 42nd homer, had two hits and leads the majors in batting average at .316.
Jack Perkins (3-13) of the A’s (64-97) allowed six runs and five hits (three homers) in five innings.
Paredes hit a two-out homer to left in the first to open the scoring.
Cam Smith walked to start the third before Pena smacked a one-out, two-run homer to center.
The Athletics scored an unearned run in the fourth to make it 3-1.
In the fifth, Smith walked with one out, stole second and moved to third on Pena’s two-out infield single. Alvarez then jumped on a 2-2 sweeper and lined over the right field wall to make it 6-1.
Pena led off the seventh with a single off Drew Rom, moved to second on a one-out single by Paredes and scored on Jose Altuve’s single. Yainer Diaz hit a drive off the wall in right-center that Bolte missed for a single to load the bases.
Christian Walker followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Paredes and make it 8-1. Spence then ripped an RBI double.
The A’s got a run in the bottom of the inning when Gelof walked, moved to second on a two-out balk by Wesneski and scored on Tommy White’s ground single.
Jose Barrosa walked to start the eighth and Pena walloped a 1-0 fastball from Yunior Tur to left to make it 11-2. Alvarez doubled and scored on Altuve’s one-out single.
Spence, who hit his first three career homers Friday, drilled a leadoff homer to right in the ninth.
