Kyle Schwarber hit his major league-leading 40th home run of the season and Jesus Luzardo pitched seven scoreless innings as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the host Seattle Mariners 6-0 Wednesday afternoon to salvage the finale of the three-game interleague series.
Bryce Harper also went deep for the Phillies, who dropped the first two games of the series, ending a nine-game winning streak.
Luzardo (12-5), who made his first All-Star Game this season, allowed just one hit, a two-out liner to left by Jhonny Pereda in the fifth inning. The left-hander walked three and struck out nine.
Philadelphia’s Tim Mayza and Jhoan Duran each pitched an inning of relief to complete the two-hit shutout. Duran allowed a leadoff single to Randy Arozarena in the ninth.
The Phillies, who totaled just three runs over the previous two games, jumped on Mariners starter Bryan Woo (9-9) early, handing him his first home loss of the season after he entered 7-0 at T-Mobile Park.
Schwarber led off the game with a double to center field and, an out later, Harper hit an opposite-field shot that hit off the top of the wall in left-center and bounced over. It was the 29th consecutive game in which Harper has reached base safely.
The Phillies tacked on four more runs in the second. Bryson Stott led off with a double to left and Brandon Marsh walked. With one out, Justin Crawford grounded a run-scoring single to right. Schwarber then hit a 2-2 fastball 425 feet over the wall in right-center, a three-run shot to make it 6-0.
Woo allowed six runs on five hits over four innings. The right-hander walked one and fanned five.
The Phillies will continue their nine-game West Coast swing with three interleague games against the Los Angeles Angels starting Friday in Anaheim, Calif. They’ll wrap up the trip with a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. The Diamondbacks are chasing Philadelphia for a National League wild-card berth.
The Mariners, who wrapped up a 4-2 homestand, will hit the road for a six-game trip to Toronto and Boston starting Friday as they try to stay in the American League playoff chase.
