ATTEMPTED MURDER

A WOMAN HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER AFTER A MONDAY MORNING STABBING IN JOHNSON CITY.  POLICE SAY IT HAPPENED AT 825 HAMILTON STREET AS OFFICERS FOUND A WOMAN WITH SEVERE INJURIES.  AN INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT A STRUGGLE HAD TAKEN PLACE AS THE HOUSE WAS IN DISARRAY.  51-YEAR-OLD ANNETTE HARVEY OF BLOUNTVILLE WAS DEVELOPED AS A SUSPECT AND SOME ITEMS LINKED TO THE CRIME WERE FOUND INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE HOME.  HARVEY WAS ARRESTED IN BRISTOL TENNESSEE.  SHE’S HELD IN THE WASHINGTON COUNTY DETENTION CENTER ON A $100-THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND.

COVID-19-NORTHEAST TN/STATE

THERE ARE 6 NEW DEATHS, 121 NEW COVID-19 CASES AND 3-THOUSAND 396 ACTIVE CASES IN THE 8 COUNTY NORTHEAST TENNESSEE REGION.  TWO OF THE DEATHS WERE REPORTED IN CARTER AND HAWKINS COUNTIES WITH ONE EACH IN WASHINGTON AND UNICOI COUNTIES.  WASHINGTON COUNTY HAS THE MOST NEW CASES WITH 38 AND SULLIVAN COUNTY HAS 28.  SULLIVAN COUNTY HAS THE MOST ACTIVE CASES WITH 873 AND WASHINGTON COUNTY HAS 866.  STATEWIDE, THERE ARE 2-THOUSAND 57 NEW CASES AND 40 NEW DEATHS FROM MONDAY’S REPORT.

COVID-19-BALLAD HEALTH

BALLAD HEALTH REPORTS 230 PATIENTS HOSPITALIZED WITH COVID-19.  THAT’S DOWN 15 FROM MONDAY AND CONTINUES A DECLINE THAT STARTED OVER A WEEK AGO.  57 PATIENTS ARE IN INTENSIVE CARE AND 33 ARE ON VENTILATORS.  THERE ARE 74 COVID-19 BEDS AVAILABLE.    BALLAD HAS ALSO ADMINSTERED 21-THOUSAND 665 FIRST DOSES OF THE COVID-19 VACCINE AND 9-THOUSAND 272 SECOND DOSES.  THE POSITIVE TEST RATE FOR THE VIRUS STANDS AT 25.4-PERCENT AND THERE’VE BEEN 95 COVID-19 DEATHS OVER THE PAST WEEK.

COVID-19—SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA/VIRGINIA

THERE ARE 7 NEW COVID-19 DEATHS AND 66 NEW COVID-19 CASES IN SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA.  3 OF THE DEATHS ARE IN WISE COUNTY WITH 1 EACH IN LEE, BUCHANAN, WASHINGTON AND SMYTH COUNTIES.  TAZEWELL COUNTY HAS THE MOST NEW CASES WITH 30 AND THERE ARE 11 NEW CASES IN WASHINGTON COUNTY.  ACROSS VIRGINIA, THERE’S BEEN AN INCREASE OF 4-THOUSAND 526 CASES AND 59 DEATHS COMPARED TO MONDAY’S REPORT.

COVID-19—VACCINE-BALLAD

BALLAD HEALTH OFFICIALS TUESDAY SAID THE REGION IS DOING WELL WHEN IT COMES TO PEOPLE GETTING THE COVID-19 VACCINE, BUT SUPPLIES REMAIN AN ISSUE. AS AN EXAMPLE, THE SULLIVAN COUNTY REGIONAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT WON’T BE OFFERING VACCINES WEDNESDAY AT THE BRISTOL DRAGWAY.  ADDITIONAL DATES WILL BE ANNOUNCED WHEN THE DEPARTMENT RECEIVES INFORMATION ABOUT VACCINE SUPPLY.

GOV LEE-SPECIAL EDUCATION SESSION

TENNESSEE GOVERNOR BILL LEE SAYS IT’S CRUCIAL THAT LAWMAKERS TAKE ACTION ON A SERIES OF MEASURES DESIGNED TO HELP ADDRESS STUDENT LEARNING LOSS BECAUSE OF COVID-19.  THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY IS IN SPECIAL SESSION—AS THE GOVERNOR SAYS THERE ARE SERIOUS PROBLEMS IF STUDENTS DON’T CATCH UP.  THE GOVERNOR IS CALLING FOR A PAY RAISE FOR TEACHERS, TARGETED READING AND MATH INTERVENTION AND NOT PASSING STUDENTS OUT OF THE 3RD GRADE UNTIL MATH AND READING SKILLS ARE ON GRADE LEVEL. ALSO, T-CAP TESTING WILL REMAIN IN PLACE, BUT THERE WON’T BE ANY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES ASSOCIATED WITH STUDENT ASSESSMENTS.

BRISTOL WOMAN PLEADS IN PONZI SCHEME

A BRISTOL REAL ESTATE AGENT HAS PLEADED GUILTY IN WHAT FEDERAL AUTHORITIES ARE CALLING A PONZI SCHEME.  47-YEAR-OLD TAMMY LYNN HAWK PLEADED TO SEVERAL COUNTS, INCLUDING WIRE FRAUD AND MONEY LAUNDERING.  SHE ADMITTED TO SWINDLING NUMEROUS CUSTOMERS WHO THOUGHT THEY WERE MAKING REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS.  INSTEAD, HAWK TOOK THE MONEY FROM NEW INVESTORS TO SUPPORT HER LIFESTYLE OR REPAY EXISTING INVESTORS.  IN THE PLEA DEAL, SHE WOULD TELL CUSTOMERS ABOUT PARCELS OF PROPERTY THAT COULD BE BOUGHT AND FLIPPED FOR SUBSTANITAL PROFIT.  24 VICTIMS LOST OVER $1-MILLION DOLLARS IN THE SCHEME.  HAWK FACES 10 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON, PLUS UP TO $1.25-MILLION DOLLARS IN FINES.

LEE COUNTY SCHOOLS-VIRTUAL

LEE COUNTY VIRGINIA SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL REMAIN ON A VIRTUAL SCHEDULE THROUGH THE REST OF JANUARY.  THE BOARD OF EDUCATION HAS EXTENDED REMOTE LEARNING AT ALL SCHOOLS THROUGH FRIDAY JANUARY 29TH.  THE PLAN IS FOR STUDENTS TO RETURN TO IN-PERSON LEARNING ON MONDAY FEBRUARY 1ST.

NORTHEAST REGION-VACCINE

OFFICIALS WITH THE NORTHEAST REGION HEALTH OFFICE ARE WORKING TO ADMINISTER AS MANY COVID-19 VACCINES AS POSSIBLE.  HOWEVER, SUPPLY IS AN ISSUE.  MEDICAL DIRECTOR DR. DAVID KIRSHCKE SAYS ALLOCATION IS BASED LARGELY ON POPULATION.  DESPITE LIMITED SUPPLIES, HEALTH OFFICIALS SAY NORTHEAST TENNESSEE HAS CONTINUED TO EXCEED THE AVERAGE STATE VACCINATION RATE.
