Alex Bregman went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs against his former team to help the Chicago Cubs wrap up the regular season by defeating the Boston Red Sox 6-2 Sunday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The game was scheduled to be played in Boston, but was moved to Tropicana Field because of the nor’easter that hit much of New England throughout the weekend.
Both of Bregman’s home runs came against Boston starter Tanner Houck, who made his first appearance on the mound since May 2025. Houck (0-1), who had Tommy John surgery last year, allowed three runs on four hits in three innings.
Bregman, who spent the 2025 season with Boston, added an RBI double and a single in the victory. He also walked once.
Braxton Garrett (1-1) limited Boston to a run on four hits in five innings of relief, and Colin Rea held Boston scoreless in the final two innings to earn his second save.
The victory prevented Boston from sweeping the three-game series. The Red Sox (87-75) were held to five hits and were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Adley Rutschman homered for the Red Sox.
Bregman’s first home run put the Cubs up 2-0 in the top of the first.
Rutschman hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1, and Boston tied the game when Nick Sogard scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the second.
The Cubs (89-73) led 3-2 after Bregman hit his second home run in the third. It was his 28th home run of the season.
Chicago extended its lead to 6-2 by adding three runs in the ninth. After Bregman’s RBI double drove in Miguel Amaya, Gabriel Arias hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Tyrone Taylor to score and stretch Chicago’s advantage to 5-2. Michael Conforto’s double drove in Bregman with the game’s final run.
Both teams will be involved in Tuesday’s wild-card round. Boston will open its series against the Yankees in New York, and Chicago will play at the San Diego Padres.
