MAN DIES IN JOHNSON CO CRASH

A MAN DIED IN A HEAD ON COLLISION IN JOHNSON COUNTY THURSDAY MORNING. ACCORDING TO THE TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL, 33 YEAR OLD BRANDON MCCOY OF MOUNTAIN CITY, WAS DRIVING HIS PICKUP TRUCK SOUTH ON US HIGHWAY 421, WHEN HE CROSSED THE CENTERLINE AND HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. BOTH VEHICLES ENDED UP IN A DITCH OFF THE ROAD.  MCCOY DIED FROM INJURIES SUFFERED IN THE CRASH. THE THP SAID THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE, ALONG WITH A PASSENGER WERE NOT INJURED.

NORTHEAST STATE RECEIVES GRANT

NORTHEAST STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE WILL RECEIVE A 1.5 MILLION DOLLAR GRANT TO CONTINUE PREPARING STUDENTS FOR AVIATION CAREERS. THE GRANT WAS AWARDED BY THE APPALACHIAN REGIONAL COMMISSION. THE MONEY WILL EXPAND THE AVIATION MAINTENANCE PROGRAM, PROVIDE SPACE IN A NEW HANGER AT TRI CITIES AIRPORT, AND HELP WITH CERTIFICATION. THE AIRPORT IS ALSO PROVIDING 500,000 DOLLARS IN SUPPORT OF THE PROJECT. IN THREE YEARS, THE PROJECT WILL SERVE EIGHT BUSINESSES WHILE TRAINING 72 COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS.

MAN TRIED TO KILL HIMSELF

THE MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING A PREGNANT SULLIVAN COUNTY MOTHER TRIED TO KILL HIMSELF BEFORE HE WAS ARRESTED.  NATHANIEL WHITE-YOUNG WAS TRYING TO COMMIT SUICIDE BY CARBON MONOXIDE POISONING WHEN HE WAS ARRESTED MONDAY IN HAMBLEN COUNTY.  HE HAD ALSO WRITTEN A SUICIDE NOTE.  WHITE-YOUNG IS CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF FIRST-DEGREE MURDER AFTER MELISSA MINGLE DIED MONDAY.  SHE WAS FOUND UNRESPONSIVE SUNDAY IN HER YARD ON FORDTOWN ROAD. 

MAN CHARGED WITH INDECENT EXPOSURE

A MAN HAS BEEN CHARGED AFTER SHOWING NUDE PICTURES TO AN UNDERAGE CASHIER AT A STORE. ACCORDING TO THE SCOTT COUNTY VIRGINIA SHERIFF’S OFFICE, STEVEN CLARK WAS ARRESTED OCTOBER 5TH, AFTER HE WENT INTO A LOCAL BUSINESS, AND WHILE BUYING ITEMS, HAD A CELL PHONE WITH PICTURES OF A NAKED MAN. THEY SAY WHEN CLARK WENT TO PAY FOR THE ITEMS, HE LAID THE PHONE ON A SHELF AT THEY CHECKOUT IN A WAY THAT ONLY THE CLERK COULD SEE. ON ONE OCCASION THE CLERK WAS UNDER AGE. CLARK IS CHARGED WITH INDECENT EXPOSURE, AND USING AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE TO FACILITATE CERTAIN OFFENSES WITH CHILDREN.

POLICE SEARCH FOR SHOOTING SUSPECT

KINGSPORT POLICE ARE SEARCHING FOR A MAN SUSPECTED OF SHOOTING ANOTHER MAN DURING AN ALTERCATION THURSDAY AFTERNOON. OFFICERS RESPONDED TO A HOME IN THE 3900 BLOCK OF ALDERWOOD DRIVE ABOUT 3:00 PM. INVESTIGATORS SAY 39 YEAR OLD TRAVIS GALE BISHOP CAME TO THE HOME, AND AN ALTERCATION ENSUED. BISHOP IS ACCUSED OF SHOOTING THE VICTIM, A 19 YEAR OLD MALE, IN THE LEG. THE VICTIM WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT OF SERIOUS INJURIES. POLICE HAVE OBTAINED A WARRANT FOR BISHOP, CHARGING HIM WITH ESPECIALLY AGGRAVATED BURGLARY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AND POSSESSION OF A HANDGUN BY A CONVICTED FELON. HE’S DESCRIBED AS A WHITE MALE, 6-0 FEET TALL 180 POUNDS, WITH BLONDE HAIR AND BLUE EYES. POLICE SAY HE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED ARMED AND DANGEROUS.

7 PEOPLE INDICTED ON A TOTAL OF 976 CHARGES

SEVEN PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INDICTED ON 976 CHARGES INVOLVING FELONY PRESCRIPTION FRAUD. WISE COUNTY AND NORTON COMMONWEALTH’S ATTORNEY CHUCK SLEMP, SAID THE INDICTMENTS SPLIT EVENLY BETWEEN PRESCRIPTION FRAUD, AND CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT PRESCRIPTION FRAUD WERE UNSEALED WEDNESDAY, AFTER THE MULTI-JURISDICTIONAL GRAND JURY RETURNED THE INDICTMENTS SEPTEMBER 23RD. HE SAID THE SEVEN PEOPLE WERE PART OF A PRESCRIPTION DRUG RING IN THE REGION. 33 YEAR OLD TRAVIS KILGORE, 31 YEAR OLD BRITTANY MCREYNOLDS AND 58 YEAR OLD TAMERA THOMPSON ALL OF NORTON, RECEIVED THE BULK OF THE CHARGES. ALSO CHARGED WERE 38 YEAR OLD MICHAEL SARGENT OF ROANOKE, 33 YEAR OLD LAWAYNA THOMPSON OF NORTON, AND 37 YEAR OLD CHRISTOPHER SARTIN AND 37 YEAR OLD TINA SATIN BOTH OF WISE WERE ALSO CHARGED.

UNICOI—POLICE CHIEF

AS PART OF THE TOWN OF UNICOI’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION, THE TOWN WILL BE ANNOUNCING ITS FIRST POLICE CHIEF TONIGHT.  THIS COMES AFTER THE UNICOI BOARD OF MAYOR AND ALDERMEN VOTED IN JULY TO CREATE A POLICE DEPARTMENT.  THE ANNOUNCEMENT AND SWEARING IN IS SCHEDULED FOR 6 P.M. AT THE TOURIST INFORMATION CENTER.
